CRUE in Portugal – Certificate of Registration for EU Citizens
The CRUE (Certificado de Registo de Cidadão da União Europeia) is the official document that certifies the legal residence of citizens of the European Union (EU), European Economic Area (EEA), and Switzerland in Portugal.
This certificate is required for EU citizens who wish to live in Portugal for more than 3 months and replaces the need for a traditional residence permit.
Who Needs to Apply for the CRUE in Portugal?
The CRUE is mandatory for:
- Citizens of the European Union (EU)
- Citizens of the European Economic Area (EEA)
- Citizens of Switzerland
👉 If you plan to stay in Portugal for more than 90 days, you must register and obtain the CRUE.
When and Where to Apply for the CRUE
You must apply for the CRUE:
- Within 30 days after completing 3 months (90 days) of residence in Portugal
- At the City Hall (Câmara Municipal) of your area of residence

The CRUE is typically:
- Issued on the same day
- Delivered directly at the City Hall

- Children under 6: €7.50
Validity of the CRUE
- Valid for 5 years
- After 5 years, EU citizens can apply for permanent residence in Portugal with AIMA
